A Letter from Micky
If you are considering building in the Wakatipu Basin, the first step is a conversation. So, I will start by sharing exactly who we are and why I started Provenance Homes.
I have been in the construction industry for twenty years. Since 2013, I have been building exclusively here in the Wakatipu Basin. Over nine of those years were spent directing large-scale residential portfolios, ultimately serving as Construction Manager. That high-volume environment was an invaluable proving ground. It is a setting that demands rigorous systems, strict adherence to timelines, and ironclad budget management. It taught me exactly how to run a highly efficient, predictable operation.
Over time, I realised that my favourite part of the process is the direct collaboration with clients and the deep dive into the architectural details. That level of personal connection is naturally the hardest thing to maintain when a company is scaling up. I wanted to build a business where I did not have to spread my focus across dozens of simultaneous builds. I wanted to create refined, attainable homes while maintaining a direct, open alliance with the people who will actually live in them.
That is why I stepped away to establish Provenance Homes. As an independent builder, I deliberately limit our annual project intake. This restraint is not just a business model. It is a strict commitment to focus. It ensures that when we take on your build, it receives my uncompromising, undivided attention from the first concept to well past key handover.
Living in the Jacks Point area and raising my family here, I have a deep respect for this region. When I am spending my downtime trail running the hills around our home, I am constantly reminded of the unique demands of the Otago environment. Building at altitude in this basin requires more than technical precision. It requires a genuine understanding of the landscape.
We approach every project with a simple philosophy: An Honest Build. It means a "No Surprises" approach, where we prioritize clear communication and alignment throughout the build. We operate with high-transparency contracts to ensure you are informed of any necessary shifts before they happen, never after. And it means handing over a home that is built with absolute integrity.
Building a home is a significant milestone, and the relationships we build with our clients are intended to outlast the construction process. As a Licensed Building Practitioner, I take that responsibility personally. When we finish your home, your name is not the only one on the door. Mine is too.
Micky Montgomery
Director, Provenance Homes
Micky's own home, Wakatipu Basin. Micky was the Licensed Building Practitioner on the build.Honest
We are honest about price, timeline, and what a site will and won't allow. We work to fixed-price contracts. Three things move the number: variations you request and approve, provisional sum items named in the contract, and events outside anyone's control. If something shifts, you hear about it before it happens, not after.
Considered
Every material meets another material somewhere. Schist to timber, steel to concrete, roof to wall. Each of those junctions is worked out on its own terms before it is built. That is where a build holds or fails.
Recorded
Every build is handed over with the Provenance Document, a record of where the materials came from, which trades worked on the build, and the decisions made and why. It is a record of our accountability as much as it is a record of your home.
Local
We build in the Wakatipu Basin and the wider Otago region only. The trades, the suppliers, and the knowledge of how consenting works here take years to build up and they don't travel.
